Crown And Bridge

A crown and bridge are dental restorations used to restore and replace missing or damaged teeth, improving both the function and appearance of the mouth. These procedures are commonly performed by general dentists and restorative dentists. Here’s a closer look at crown and bridge treatments:

Dental Crown (Cap):

A dental crown is a custom-made, tooth-shaped cap that covers a damaged, decayed, or weakened
tooth. It provides strength, protection, and aesthetic improvement. Crowns are often used in the
following situations:

To restore a tooth with a large cavity that cannot be adequately repaired with a filling.

To protect a tooth after a root canal treatment.

To cover a cracked, broken, or chipped tooth.

To improve the appearance of a severely discolored or misshapen tooth.

To anchor a dental bridge (as mentioned below).

The process of getting a dental crown typically involves:

Tooth preparation: The dentist removes a portion of the outer enamel to create space for the crown.

Impressions: An impression of the prepared tooth is taken to create a custom crown.
Temporary crown: A temporary crown is placed on the tooth while the permanent crown is being fabricated.

Permanent crown placement: The custom crown is cemented onto the prepared tooth once it’s ready.

Dental Bridge:

A dental bridge is a fixed dental prosthesis used to replace one or more missing teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth (pontics) that are held in place by dental crowns on adjacent teeth.

Dental bridges help restore proper chewing function, maintain facial structure, and prevent remaining teeth from shifting. There are different types of bridges, including traditional bridges, cantilever bridges, and Maryland bridges.

The process of getting a dental bridge generally involves:

Preparation of abutment teeth: The teeth on either side of the gap are prepared to receive dental crowns.

Impressions: Similar to crown placement, impressions are taken to create a custom bridge.

Permanent bridge placement: The custom bridge is cemented onto the abutment teeth, anchoring the artificial tooth or teeth in place.

Both dental crowns and bridges are designed to be durable and long-lasting. They are typically made from materials like porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or all-metal, depending on factors such as the location of the tooth, the patient’s bite, and aesthetic preferences.

It’s important to maintain good oral hygiene and attend regular dental check-ups to ensure the longevity and health of dental crowns and bridges. Your dentist can provide personalized recommendations based on your specific dental needs.
