Dentures

Dentures are removable dental appliances that are used to replace missing teeth and restore oral function and aesthetics. They are custom-made to fit your mouth and can replace a few missing teeth (partial dentures) or an entire arch of teeth (complete or full dentures). Dentures are a common solution for individuals who have lost teeth due to decay, gum disease, trauma, or other reasons. Here’s an overview of dentures:

Types of Dentures:

Partial Dentures: These are used when you have some natural teeth remaining. Partial dentures consist of replacement teeth attached to a metal or plastic framework that matches the color of your gums. They are held in place using clasps that attach to your natural teeth.

Complete Dentures: Complete dentures are used when all teeth in an arch (upper or lower) are missing. They consist of a full set of replacement teeth mounted on an acrylic base that resembles gum tissue. Complete dentures are held in place by suction and the muscles of the cheeks and tongue.

Implant-Supported Dentures: These dentures are attached to dental implants, which are surgically placed into the jawbone. Implant-supported dentures offer improved stability and can prevent bone loss in the jaw.

The Denture Process: Getting dentures typically involves several steps:

Impressions: Your dentist takes impressions of your mouth to create accurate models of your gums and any remaining teeth. These models are used to design your dentures.

Customization: The color, shape, and size of the replacement teeth are customized to match your natural appearance and facial features.

Try-In: Before the final dentures are made, you may have a try-in appointment to ensure the fit and appearance are satisfactory. Adjustments can be made if needed.

Final Fitting: Once adjustments are complete, the final dentures are fabricated. Your dentist will place and adjust them for optimal comfort and fit.

Caring for Dentures: Proper care and maintenance are essential for the longevity of your
dentures:

Cleaning: Clean your dentures daily by brushing them with a soft-bristle denture brush and mild soap or denture cleaner. Avoid using regular toothpaste, as it can be abrasive and damage the denture material.

Soaking: Remove dentures at night and soak them in water or a denture-cleaning solution to keep them moist and clean.

Oral Hygiene: Even with dentures, it’s important to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing your gums, tongue, and remaining teeth (if applicable) daily.

Regular Check-Ups: Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups to ensure the fit and condition of your dentures. Over time, adjustments or replacements may be needed.

Dentures can significantly improve your ability to chew, speak, and smile. However, it may take some time to adjust to wearing dentures, especially if they are your first set. Your dentist will provide guidance on how to adapt to and care for your new dentures. If you experience any discomfort or problems with your dentures, don’t hesitate to reach out to your dentist for assistance.
